Deaths Due to Dementia in 2017: 6 statistics

- Dementia was an underlying cause of death for 261,914 people in the U.S. in 2017.
- Alzheimer disease accounted for 46% of these deaths.
- 66.7 deaths per 100,000 people were due to dementia as an underlying cause of death.
- 72.7 per 100,000 female deaths were due to dementia, compared to 56.4 male deaths per 100,000.
- Seniors ages 65-74 had 56.9 deaths per 100,000 due to dementia, compared to 2,707.3 deaths per 100,000 for those aged 85 and over.
- Hispanics had lower age-adjusted death rates due to dementia (46.0 per 100,000) than non-Hispanic blacks (65 per 100,000) or non-Hispanic whites (70.8 per 100,000).
