The HealthSprocket categorization of lists does not necessarily follow the standard dictionary definitions of "fact" or "opinion." Instead, for purposes of HealthSprocket categorization, the following definitions apply:

Video and Audio Lists are links to video or audio clips providing various health care lists, regardless if the list is fact or opinion based. Video or Audio Lists may be submitted by a third party, and simply provide the title, description and link to the list which is conveyed via a video or audio file residing on another web site such as YouTube. Video or Audio Lists are subject to review, and will not be posted immediately.

Fact Based Lists have relevant data to support the basis of the list, and a source for the list and data. A relevant timeframe for the applicable data should be indicated. Fact based lists can include opinions expressed in surveys, so long as the survey results for listed responses can be expressed with data, such as percentage of respondents. Also, Fact Based Lists can include a list of items attributed to a third party, even if the items involve opinions, so long as the source and link to the third party are clearly indicated (in which case the "fact" involved is that the third party made those statements.) Please note that fact based lists do not have to involve rankings. The list can simply be corresponding data for applicable items indicated in the list.

Opinion Based Lists do not require data or sources but must attribute you as the source of the list.

Defaults: When in doubt, categorize the list as Opinion Based,so long as you are the author, or categorize it as fact based if you are not the author but have indicate the source and link. If the list is a link to video or audio file, it would always be indicated as a Video or Audio List.

Examples of Fact Based Lists could include:
  • A list of the top ten hospitals in the country according to a national public opinion poll, with the source of the poll indicated, and the timeframe of the poll
  • A list of the obesity rates for adults in selected states, with the source of the data indicated, and the timeframe of the data
  • The  total health care expenditures for various countries, expressed as a percentage of their nation's GDP, with the source of the data indicated, and the timeframe of the data.

Examples of Opinion Based Lists could include:
  • A list of the top ten hospitals in the country, in your opinion.
  • A list of seven highly effective approaches towards improving patient satisfaction, in your opinion.
  • Five influential health care policy makers, in your opinion, without regard to rank
